The January 2016 blizzard's heaviest totals fell between the I-78 and I-80 corridors. ONJSC recaps dated March 6, 2010 and February 6, 2016
- What we write here
- Umbrella limits for corporate contracts, contractor's equipment including rented loaders, general liability for plowing and ice control, commercial auto, workers' compensation and contract review. Coverage depends on the policy's actual forms and endorsements.
Working the Rain-Snow Line
The State Climatologist's climate overview describes the northern edge of New Jersey's central zone as often being the boundary between freezing and non-freezing precipitation in winter (ONJSC, undated overview). For a contractor, that boundary is a scheduling problem. One storm can start as snow in Flemington, run as sleet in New Brunswick and fall as rain in Trenton, then flip back overnight as temperatures drop.
Mixed storms are where per-push pricing and real exposure part ways. You may never drop a blade and still salt three times. Each application is a visit someone could later ask about, so log the time, the conditions and the material for every one. If your contract prices by the push and says little about ice, fix the contract before the season starts.
The February 5–6, 2010 storm shows how sharp the line can get. ONJSC reported more than a foot of snow south of Route 195 and little or no precipitation north of the Route 78 corridor (March 6, 2010 recap). A contractor holding accounts in both Mercer and Somerset could have worked all night at one end of the book and sat idle at the other.
Campuses, Office Parks and Long Contracts
Central Jersey counts 45,500 business establishments and 876,162 employees (our sums from Census County Business Patterns 2023). Princeton 08540 alone holds 2,180 establishments, and East Brunswick, Somerset, Edison and Bridgewater each top 1,200 (ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023).
Large commercial clients write long snow contracts. Look for level-of-service language (lots open by a set hour, walks treated before staff arrive), indemnity clauses, and insurance sections that require umbrella limits. A national property manager may ask for more limit than a small contractor carries by default. An umbrella over both liability and auto can close that gap, as long as it carries no snow and ice carve-out of its own.
Big lots also mean big machines. Loaders and skid steers with pushers, sometimes rented for the season, belong on a contractor's equipment schedule. If you rent, read the rental agreement closely: it often makes you responsible for the machine and asks for proof of coverage before delivery.
Long Cold, Short Drive
Last winter tested stamina as much as fleets. Trenton averaged 17.3 degrees from January 24 to February 9, 2026, its coldest 17-day stretch since January 1984 (ONJSC, March 6, 2026). Snow that lands in cold like that stays put. Piles grow, meltwater refreezes every night, and crews stay on call for weeks. That is workers' compensation exposure, from slips on the job to strains from shovels, and the payroll that drives the premium grows with every extra shift.
Hunterdon is the transition county. ONJSC files it with central, and its stations, Flemington 5 NNW at 27.1 inches and Wertsville 4 NE at 23.9 inches (NOAA 1991–2020, provisional), sit closer to New Brunswick than to the northwest. In coastal storms it can still behave like the highlands: Hunterdon's top total in the February 22–23, 2026 blizzard was 11.0 inches, against county highs of 18 to 24 inches elsewhere in the region (ONJSC, March 6, 2026).

Central Jersey Questions
Why is Hunterdon in Central Jersey on this site?
Because the State Climatologist puts it there. ONJSC places Hunterdon in its central snow division (April 7, 2018), and its station normals, such as Flemington 5 NNW at 27.1 inches a year (NOAA 1991–2020, provisional), sit with Central Jersey's rather than with the 38.7 inches at Sussex 3 WNW (provisional).
My contract pays per push, but the storm turned to ice. Does that change my coverage?
Your coverage doesn't change with the weather; your exposure does. Ice means more salting visits and more refreeze calls, and each one belongs in your log. For insurance, two things matter: that your liability policy covers ice control as well as plowing, and that the contract's service promises are ones your crew can keep.
I rent a loader for the season. Who insures it?
Usually you do, under the rental agreement. Cover it under your contractor's equipment policy for rented or leased machines, at the value the agreement names, and send the rental company the certificate it asks for. Coverage depends on the policy's actual forms and endorsements.
Do I have to come to the Flemington office?
