Snow Plow Insurance at the Jersey Shore

Atlantic City International Airport, inland at Pomona, has a NOAA 1991–2020 snowfall normal of 17.4 inches a year, with 2.8 days a year of 2 inches or more. NJ Snow Plow Insurance, a Friedlander Associates Inc. agency based in Flemington and licensed in all 21 New Jersey counties, insures snow and ice contractors across the Jersey Shore.

Low normals, big storms: Monmouth's top total in the December 26–27, 2010 blizzard was 31.0 inches (ONJSC, January 3, 2011).

Fewer Storms, Bigger Storms

Shore normals are low. Atlantic City International Airport averages 2.8 days a year with 2 inches or more, and Cape May 2 NW averages 2.4 (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). Then a nor'easter lines up and the gradient flips. In the December 26–27, 2010 blizzard, Monmouth's high was 31.0 inches and Ocean's was 30.0, while Warren County in the northwest topped out at 7.0 (ONJSC, January 3, 2011). ONJSC said the February 22–23, 2026 storm was somewhat reminiscent of that one, and Strathmore in Monmouth measured 26.5 inches (March 6, 2026 recap).

The State Climatologist notes that coastal storms, often called nor'easters, are most frequent between October and April (ONJSC, undated climate overview). So the shore's snow risk arrives in lumps. That is hard on a business sized for an average year. A contractor with three trucks and a book built for ordinary winters faces a storm like December 2010 with the same three trucks.

The usual fixes each raise an insurance question:

  • Renting a loader. The rental agreement will name a value and ask for proof of coverage before delivery.
  • Borrowing a truck. Hired and non-owned auto coverage is what protects you while you drive a vehicle you don't own.
  • Calling in a subcontractor. The sub needs its own liability, auto and workers' compensation, and a certificate in your file before it touches a client's lot.

Wind, Water and Salt Air

Coastal storms bring more than snow. Wind can drift a lot shut again soon after you clear it, which means more passes and more time on the road. Water is the other problem. In the January 2016 blizzard, ONJSC reported that water levels in Cape May County exceeded those observed during Sandy (February 6, 2016 recap). A plow truck parked in a low yard, or a skid steer left at a waterfront lot, can flood in the same storm you were hired to work.

Flood damage to a truck is usually a physical damage claim under the auto policy's comprehensive coverage, and only if the truck carries it; a truck insured for liability alone has no coverage for its own damage. On machines, check whether your contractor's equipment form covers flood. Corrosion from road salt and sea air is maintenance rather than a claim, since auto and equipment forms generally exclude wear, rust and corrosion. Coverage depends on the policy's actual forms and endorsements.

Seasonal Properties and Year-Round Paper

Lakewood 08701 counts 4,031 business establishments, more than any other New Jersey ZIP code (our ranking of ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023), with Freehold and Toms River above 1,800 each. Further south, Atlantic City 08401 has 832 and Wildwood 08260 has 740 (ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023).

On parts of the coast, the calendar changes the work. Some properties run on a summer schedule: a closed restaurant, a rental complex with no one on site, a condo association with a part-time manager. A closed property still has walks and a lot. A delivery driver, an owner checking the pipes or a year-round neighbor can still cross them, so your contract should say whether refreeze is your job when nobody calls.

A shuttered property still has a walk, and someone will cross it.

If you mow and landscape in summer and plow in winter, that's the setup where a snow exclusion hides: a landscaping liability policy carrying an endorsement that excludes or limits snow and ice removal. Read how to spot a landscaper snow exclusion, see how we insure landscapers who plow, and if you clear private roads or townhouse communities, see HOA and condo plowing.

Jersey Shore Questions

It barely snows at the shore. Why carry snow coverage?

Because the averages hide the storms. Atlantic City International Airport's NOAA 1991–2020 normal is 17.4 inches a year, yet Monmouth and Ocean each had county highs of 30 inches or more in the December 26–27, 2010 blizzard (ONJSC, January 3, 2011). A storm like that puts every account you hold to work on the same night.

I landscape in summer and plow in winter. Does my landscaping policy cover the plowing?

Check the forms schedule before the first storm. Landscaper policies sometimes carry an endorsement that excludes or limits snow and ice work, and the declarations page won't show it. Our guide to the landscaper policy snow exclusion shows where to look.

Is flood damage to my plow truck covered?

If the truck carries comprehensive (other-than-collision) coverage on a commercial auto policy, flood is usually included. If it's insured for liability only, damage to the truck itself isn't covered. Coverage depends on the policy's actual forms and endorsements.

Monmouth has no NOAA snowfall normal. What do you go by?

Storm records and the nearest stations. ONJSC's vetted totals put Monmouth's high at 26.5 inches in Strathmore during the February 22–23, 2026 storm (March 6, 2026 recap). We don't quote a county average because NOAA doesn't publish one.
